Understanding AI Discoverability Metrics in Your Report

What the AI Visibility Slide Measures
Every report includes an AI Visibility slide that answers one question: when someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI-powered search a question in your client's space, do the outlets that covered them show up in the answer?
Three numbers anchor the slide:
- Outlets Cited by AI — how many of the publications in this report have been cited by an AI platform, out of the total
- Total AI Citations — the combined citation count across every outlet
- AI Search Impressions — estimated search volume behind the topic, shown only when PRCharter has a number for it (the tile is left out entirely rather than showing a dash)
Below that, a table lists each outlet with its individual citation count and which platform(s) cited it, plus a chart breaking total citations down by platform.
What 'Cited by AI' Actually Means
The citation count is publisher-level, not article-level. It answers "has this outlet ever been cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI search," not "has AI cited the specific article you got covered in." The underlying data is domain-level citation tracking pulled from DataForSEO's LLM Mentions data, matched against each outlet's domain.
Tip: When you present this slide, say "TechCrunch has been cited across AI answers X times" — not "this specific article was cited X times." The distinction matters if a client asks a follow-up question.
The platform breakdown chart currently shows two platforms — ChatGPT and Google's AI-powered search results. Per-outlet, PRCharter also tracks Perplexity citations where available, shown as a platform chip next to that outlet in the table.
Why This Matters for PR Right Now
Readers increasingly get their news summarized by AI before they ever click a link. A placement in an outlet AI models already cite carries a kind of weight that a raw domain-authority number doesn't capture — it's a signal that the outlet is part of what AI systems already treat as a credible source.
For clients who ask "why does this matter," the honest framing is: this slide is the AI-era counterpart to SEO authority — not a guarantee that your specific story gets quoted by a chatbot, but a read on whether the publications carrying your coverage are ones AI platforms already lean on.
Where Else AI Citations Show Up
The same per-outlet citation count reappears in the Coverage Index appendix at the back of the report, next to each placement's Domain Authority and Page Authority — labeled "AI cites." It's the same publisher-level number as the AI Visibility slide, just folded into the full list of every link in the report so it isn't buried in a single summary slide.
